Senior Q&A with Bowen

As the seniors wrap up their final pre-season at BC, it was only fitting for them to grill Bowen on some questions that they have been longing to know......

Who is your favorite player on the BC lacrosse team? OR Would you rather go back to college and win a national championship or win an Olympic Gold Medal in the sport of your choice? - Emily Hannigan

There are 26 answers to that first question!

Hmm…that second question is tough. If I was guaranteed to have the same college experience, with the same teammates and coach, and the only difference was the outcome of our sudden-death overtime loss to Maryland in the National Championship, then I would say go back to college and WIN! However, if none of that was the same, I wouldn’t want to change the experience I had so I would go for GOLD…in skiing!

Is there any meaning behind the name McClaine for your second daughter? – Lauren Fitzpatrick
Yes! McClaine is Charlie’s mother’s maiden name. And, Ellen, her middle name, was my grandmother’s name – she was a 2nd mother to me as I grew up right next door to her. So, now both of our daughters have the maiden names of our mothers. What do we do for #3?!

What has been your favorite moment with the BC lacrosse team off the field? – Margot Spatola

Another tough one…so many to choose from. The final “practice” of each fall season is always fun when the seniors get to plan it, and this year in particularly was great! The seniors deciding to have everyone tie-dye shirts on which they had written nicknames for everyone was a blast and a great idea! Halloween is always great, too, as the true characters on the team really shine through in costume and bring laughter for all of us to share! On a more personal level, the times I see my two daughters with the team – at dinners, in airports, on bus rides…anywhere – is always a very special moment. It is a true gift to raise my children with such wonderful role models around them every day!

If you were a Disney princess who would it be and why? – Maura Mahoney

Seeing as we don’t allow the word “princess” to be spoken in our house, it is hard to answer this question!! I don’t even know who there is to choose from, but I am sure you, Maura, as our wonderful “Disney tourist” could choose one best suited for me!

If you had one magical power what would it be? or if you could read one book/eat one thing the rest of your life, what would it be? – Rachel Tinquist

If I had one magical power, it would be to end hatred in the world. Too much war and too much hatred has been around far too long…it would be wonderful (a dream, I know) if everyone could simply talk through their differences and disagreements instead of losing lives.

Too many books to choose from, but if I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life, I would have to say chocolate ice cream!

If there was a movie made of you life, what actress would play you and why? Who would play Charlie and why? – Katie DeBlois

Yikes, you guys are challenging me with these questions. One insight into my life is these are hard questions because I don’t spend much time following the Hollywood world! If you know an actress who has known from when she was very little that she wanted nothing more than to have children of her own, play sports at the highest possible level, and who believes there is nothing more important than one’s family…that would be the actress who plays me! Charlie? Well…after all, the actor would have to be tall, dark, and handsome, of course! Calm, cool and collected would pretty much complete the picture!

What is your favorite food?? And what are you looking forward to most this season? – Jenna McCabe

Ice cream! But, I try not to eat too much of it…a special treat! As for “real food”, I would say my favorite meat is lamb.

There is SO much to look forward to this season, but I think I am most excited about seeing the hard work of building over the last three years come together on the field in 2009. The leadership you eight seniors bring, along with the incredible camaraderie this team has, will undoubtedly lead to success. I am so proud of how hard this group has worked through the fall and in the preseason, and how committed the eight of you have been since day one (almost) four years ago…I truly believe it will show this season and can’t wait!

What's your favorite kind of music to listen too? and/ or what has been your favorite concert you have been too? – Katie Monaghan

I like mellow music and country…my favorite concert I have ever been to was Jimmy Buffet – I was obsessed with him when I was younger and still enjoy listening to him now.

McClaine Ellen Martin: BC's Newest Eagle!

McCLAINE ELLEN MARTIN

We are pleased and excited to announce that Bowen has given birth to a beautiful baby girl, McClaine Ellen Martin who was born on January 4, 2009 weighing in at a very healthy 8 lbs. 11 oz. She was a stubborn little one, coming two weeks late, but the BC family is so thrilled to add a mini-eagle to the roster.

Baby and mom are doing great. And its no suprise that Bowen is already itching to get back to work!

Today is our first team meeting and we begin testing this week. We are looking forward to getting straight to work where we can begin preparing for our season openener on February 21st!

Holiday Happenings - Lauren Costello

Junior, Lauren Costello, was recently in Australia, where she had the opportunity to play lacrosse and experience 'down under'.

"G'day mates! Greetings from down under! I'm currently in Australia and unfortunately I am leaving this great place in two days. I came as part of a US program that plays lacrosse and travels around both Sydney and Melbourne for about two weeks playing games and exploring these great cities. The team is made up of 13 girls from various colleges and divisions in the US. We arrived in Sydney on New Years Eve-said to be even bigger than Times Square. It was absolutely crazy with so many people all packed into one street. There was an amazing fireworks display right off the bridge with the Sydney Opera House in the background which was truly amazing. The first day we went to Bondi beach and saw Paris Hilton! The next day we headed over to manly beach, ate fish and chips, and ended the day touring the Sydney Opera House. I also was able to see the Blue Mountains which are known for their caves, mining and amazing scenery. Today we went to feed and pet kangaroos and koala's, toured one of Australia's famous winery's and ended the day joining a local sailing club participating in their weekly sailing races! Tomorrow we are off for surfing and kayaking in Apollo bay.

The lacrosse has been an amazing experience as well! We played five games, win total including two Australian state teams and a team from New Zealand. We ended up winning the championship game beating Team Victoria on Tuesday night (the first time the US has won this tournament!). The games were great, but the experience of it all was even greater. Although I'm so sad to leave the beach weather, I can't wait to get back and start off the season with everyone...Cheers mates!"

Holiday Happenings: Peyton Killeen

A holiday perspective from junior, Peyton Killeen:

Hey Everyone!
I hope you all had a great and relaxing winter break! I know I have had a wonderful time at home with family and friends. I’m anxious to get back to school and reunite with everyone and start the season we have all been working so hard for! As a junior I feel that the pieces of our team have finally fallen into place and that this is going to be a great season for us!

For Christmas and New Years my family and I went to the mountains of Virginia where we have been going my whole life. My older sister just arrived back from Australia so I was a bit jealous of her tan, but then I reminded myself that we are going to Palm Beach for spring break and hopefully my Irish skin will absorb some sort of sunlight…We will see…another thing to look forward to for the 2009 season!

Anyways I know everyone has been keeping in good touch and it sounds like we are all ready for the season ahead. We have another addition to our team, McClain! What a lucky girl to have her first BC lacrosse tailgate at such a young age! Haha!
See everyone soon and enjoy your last couple days of break!

Love,
Peyton

Road Trippin' to Nashville

Senior Captain, Maura Mahoney, gives us a detailed account of her trip down to Nashville to watch the Eagles take on Vanderbilt in the Music City Bowl. Unfortunatly, BC fell to the Commodors, but Maura and fellow classmates Katie Deblois, Lauren Fitzpatrick, Emily Hannigan, Margot Spatola and Rachel Tinquist still managed to have a very memorable trip!
"Sooo Nashville was amazing we all had legitimately the best time. I'm not sure what to write for the blog but i'll just give you the rundown/highlights of what we did and hopefully that will be good enough.

Upon arriving in Nashville, we all piled into a cab and made our way to the hotel. When we got there, we checked into our 1 star hotel and got ready to check out downtown Nashville. We ate dinner and then walked up and down 2nd Ave. aka the best street in America. There was a "Battle of the Bands" going on where they had the Vandy marching band and the Screaming Eagles marching band playing their fight songs while marching towards each other down 2nd ave. It was fun being the minority and hearing the Vandy fans telling you how awful BC was. After the battle of the bands we went to do karokee where Emily and I did our best rendition of 'Heartbreaker' by Mariah Carey and Jay-Z... our mic's were shut off.

The next morning we decided to try out the local cuisine and headed to a local diner. Not only did they use half a stick of butter per breakfast but the wait staff greated us saying "Hey babies, what can I get y'all?" It was awesome. After our breakfast we went back to the hotel and got dressed in our BC attire. We walked to the stadium (it was half mile away) and tailgated with some other BC fans. Though we sat front row, it was absolutely freezing at the game. BC lost but we were still excited for new years so we didn't let the loss or the temperature ruin our new years eve. After self-proclaiming ourselves the IT girls of Nashville, we rang in the New Year on 2nd Ave. It was so fun. Overall, the Nashville trip was a major success, and we can not stop talking about it. It was a perfect way to get together before heading back to school and starting our final season together as seniors -minus Monaghan and Jenna :(...

And that's the trip."

Holiday Happenings: Hannah Alley

A Holiday perspective from sophomore, Hannah Alley:

Hi everyone! I hope you all are doing great and having a wonderful holiday season. So far my break has been very relaxing and refreshing. I came home to a winter wonderland in Chicago! There was at least a foot and a half of snow and it has been at least zero degrees there everyday! With that kind of weather my workouts were limited to the ever thrilling court-runs! I was very excited about heading to Florida for Christmas! While I have been here I have been laying on the beach, passing around the lacrosse ball with my sisters, swimming in the pool and golfing. Oh and having a field to run on was also much more enjoyable. My daddy longlegs like much better to stride out on the 100's than to be confined to a gym! Christmas was wonderful, and now we are getting ready to celebrate my Dad's birthday tomorrow!

I have to say that I am very disappointed my Chicago bears lost today and did not make the playoffs but I know I still have hope in the EAGLES football team!! I can't wait to watch them play, and I am so jealous of some of you seniors that are going!

Well, after watching the movie Miracle last night, I have to say that it got me that much more pumped for us to have "our time" this 2009 season! With this tough workout packet, our team's work ethic and leadership, as well as, the support and guidance of our coaches, I know we are going to surprise the nation just like the USA surprised the Russians! Sorry this is so cheesy but I am just so excited!! Miss you all so much! Have a great rest of break and a Happy New Year!

Love,
Hannah

A Day of Festivities

Your Eagles continued a three-year tradition by decorating holiday cookies with the children at Franciscan Hospital on Friday.  This has become one of the most memorable days of the year for the team AND for the children.  It is a reminder for all of us about what truly matters in life, and certainly is a day that puts wins and losses, tough conditioning runs, hard lifts, difficult exams etc. into perspective.  There is nothing more powerful than seeing the faces of these children light up when we arrive and spend a couple hours of our day giving back.  There is no question all of our faces light up as well - these children truly have an amazing impact on us all!

The visit to Franciscan ended with a surprise visit from two gold medal winning women's soccer players who now play for the Boston Breakers.  The children of Franciscan, along with your Eagles, were very excited to meet these stars (Angela Hucles and Heather Mitts) and touch an Olympic Gold Medal!

The Day of Festivities ended with our annual team holiday party at Bowen's house.  With good food supplied from Blue Ribbon Barbecue, along with some great desserts, the team was
well fed and enjoyed another evening together.  With the Christmas tree decorated and the Menorah lit, everyone was in the holiday spirit.  We also enjoyed the company of Judith, as she always brings a smile to our faces!  And, we had the pleasure of
two little elves celebrating with us: Addison & Bailey Kent, Jen's two youngest daughters.  Cannon kept them company as well...giving hugs and being entertained by her "big sisters."

After our dinner, we all spoke of the things we were most grateful for during the past year, and there is no doubt everyone is very grateful for a wonderfully tight-knit team who believes in one another, cares about one another, and is led by a great group of seniors.  The evening ended with an exchange of small & fun gifts from one "Secret Snowflake" to another - laughter and happiness filled the room!
The 2009 team is clearly a special one, and we are all looking forward to the season the lies ahead!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL and BEST WISHES FOR A GREAT NEW YEAR!

(see all pictures from the day under our picture section!)
